"Most kids don't need directions on how to eat candy. It's just sort of part of our DNA. Apparently some perhaps do need a warning about how not to eat smarties. Many kids across the nation are ingesting Smarties, crushing and snorting the candy. As soon as the principal at Portsmouth Rhode Island Middle School found out it was happening with his students, he immediately sent an email to parents...There could be harmful side effects. Any time that you snort or you inhale a substance into your lungs that is not meant to be, it is definitely hazardous to your health."

Snorting Smarties is something you do one time and then never do again. From personal experience in middle school, it is one of the top 3 most painful things I've ever done.
Q: Friend, how did you end up snorting smarties before it was even a trend?
A: As a Colombian, it is kind of in my DNA to snort powders and foreign substances. So naturally in Italian class in middle school, I crushed up some Smarties and my friend dared me to snort it. CHALLENGE ACCEPTED. Obviously, the teacher heard my coughing fit / saw the tears running down my cheeks and saw powder all on my face so she put it all together and sent me to the nurse. I was horrified and in a great deal of pain, so I went to the bathroom instead and washed my face. I hid there till the next class and it all really just blew over (no pun intended). That moment was never spoken about again.
In conclusion: Kids will get over this trend as it hurts as much as a elbow to the nose. Parents will continue to complain about stupid things 12 year olds do and principals will continue to write letters expressing semi-legit concern. When kids start snorting real drugs in class is when parents should step in. Case Closed.
