NFL Considering Changing Extra Point Conversion

nfl – NFL Media’s Judy Battista reports the NFL Competition Committee is in preliminary talks about placing the ball at the 25-yard line for the point-after attempt. That would make the extra point a 43-yard attempt. The ball is currently spotted at the 2-yard line, a 20-yard chip shot that was converted 99.6 percent of the time during the 2013 season. The kick was so automatic that NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell floated the idea in January of eliminating the PAT entirely. “There is no consensus yet,” one member of the committee told Battista.

The NFL is considering changing the extra point conversion location to make it more difficult for kickers to successfully score a PAT. I can understand why the NFL would want to change this location, seeing as you need less than an ounce of athleticism to kick a ball through the uprights from the two yard line. I honestly think if I ever played football that I would never miss an extra point conversion. That shit is childs play. Anyway, making it harder would make sense if it didn't change the game. The simple fact is that once a team has scored a touchdown the ball is placed at the two yard line. The scoring team has the right to choose to either kick the ball through the uprights for an extra point or try to get into the endzone a second time for two extra points. By changing the location of a single extra point would they leave the the two point conversion attempt at the two yard line?

If so, they are completely taking away the element of surprise and the option for a fake or a trick play. I know we really don't see these very much in the pros but still it will completely change the game. Just because Roger Goodell doesn't like the fact that the extra point is almost impossible to miss doesn't mean he needs to go ahead and change the rules. In my opinion the rule should just stay the same. Taking the extra point away would ruin so much of the excitement of football. This way two field goals would score the same amount of points as a touchdown, this alone should be enough of an argument to keep the PAT as part of the game. Also, No longer would a team that is down 8 points with under a minute left have a chance of pushing the game into overtime or will a defensive special teams have the opportunity to block an extra point to win a game or to put the game out of reach of their opponents.

Anyway you look at it changing the rule is a terrible idea. If the league thinks kicking an extra point is too easy, well they are correct. So it should never be missed but leave the rule alone, it is fine. The reason behind getting the opportunity to score an extra point is because your team just drove the ball right down the field and took a dump on the defensive teams chest. They shouldn't have to kick a 43 yarder just because Roger doesn't think the current rule is good enough.  Fuck off Roger leave the great game of football alone.

EDITORS NOTE:

I've hated extra points since Gronk broke his arm blocking for one. Really the only reason

BLOGGERS NOTE:

Extra points should be removed from the game.
